Hey, what's up? Phil Britten here, Episode Number 24 of Innovation Hackers, and in this episode, we're talking about Expert Status; how to get or be the expert in your niche.
Now, it doesn't matter if you're starting a business on your own and you're starting from scratch, or you have an existing business selling products or services. I'm pretty sure that you would agree with me that having expert status and being the go-to person in your area, or in your niche, would benefit your business. I'm pretty sure you would agree with me.
Now, in the past few episodes we talked about some old school marketing techniques, some direct mile and business to business and J.V's. Time to put that to the side and start working on some new school stuff, and this is where I get really, really excited because, you know what, it's the way the world is going, and if you're not marketing this way in this day and age, well, you're gonna get left behind as I've said before.
So, there are a few things that you need to do. I mean, there are many things that you can do to be expert in your business and be the go-to person. At the end of the day, what we want is people knocking on our door to do business with us, rather than us having to go and hunt them down. That is the goal with expert status, being the go-to person.
So, there are a few things that you need to do that you can start implementing into your business, or into your day to day world and the life of running your business that you can start getting some results. So, first and foremost, if you're starting your business, if you're starting it from scratch, or your zagging left instead of going this way, you gotta make sure, if you wanna be an expert, you have to be passionate about what you do. You really have to be passionate about what you do to be an expert. And, if you're in an existing business and you've been doing it for quite some time, and you've lost the passion, well, it's gonna be very, very hard because, if you ever think about any expert in their niche or in their field, whether it is business, whether it's a passion business, whether it's about surfing, fishing, building a business, marketing, whatever it may be, most people who are experts in that field absolutely freaking love what they do. They love it, and they would do it for free. That's how much they love what they do. And, if you're gonna be that expert, then you need to identify what it is that you love, or re-ignite the passion with what you want to do, and what you're doing with your business.
Because, at the end of the day you've got to remember, we're all in work for a particular reason now. Some people lose sight of the reason of doing something you love, and start chasing the dollar. That's not what you really want to do; want to start and continue with the passion, with that burning desire to build a business that gives us both the money, the time and the freedom to do what we want.
So, first and foremost, make sure if you wanna be an expert, if you wanna be the go-to, you need to be passionate about what you do, okay? Be passionate. The next thing you need to do, whether you're starting off or you have an existing business is, you need to identify the people that you wanna target. Now, I am even to blame here; sometimes I've gone, well I just wanna work with everybody. And, you know what? That just doesn't cut it. Most people start in business thinking that they just wanna help everybody, but an actual fact; unless you help one person, unless you identify your number one client, you're never gonna be successful.
You may get some runs on the board, but you're not gonna exist for years and years on end. And again, you may wanna change the world, but that's okay. Find a niche that you can change first. Find the inner circle, and then you can expand out. A great example came from one of my mentors, was to, you know, like Facebook. Facebook started off as purely a social thing for universities; to share drunken photos within that university. And then, once in conquered that market, it then exploded into another market, and into another market, and into the market that we know today. So, identify your one.
Be something for one person, and go after that one person. Just try and help that one person. Which leads me to strategy number three is, once you've identified the person, the one person, the one niched type client that you wanna help, is you have to identify or clarify what they're problems are. What are their issues? What are their pain points? What is causing them to be stuck over here? You know, if it's business, it might be lack of low leads. If it's in life, it could be that I'm stressed and overwhelmed, and it could be many things.
But, if you want to take someone from where they are to where they want to be, you first have to identify or clarify what their problems are. Now, you cannot take them from point A to point B unless you do that. At the end of the day, we all want to live a better life. We all want more money, we all want more freedom, more time, and more happiness; all that type of stuff. So, if that's over here, let's just say there's a bridge, and on this side of the bridge is where they are at the problem state, the pain. You know, things are stuck, it's hard to get out of it. Over here, is the life that they want. Well, you've got to position yourself like me here, I'm in the middle of this bridge.
You've got to position yourself as the person who can take them from point A to point B. You are the vehicle. Your business, your product, your service whatever it may be, is the vehicle to take them from place of pain to a place of game. So, let me just reiterate guys the three things that you need to focus on if you wanna be considered or seen as the expert or go-to person in your niche is, one; you must be passionate about what you do, number two, you must identify the people that you want to target, the people that you wanna help, and number three, you have to clarify what problems they have, so that you can unstuck them. You can unstick them from where they are, and help them to get to that dream life. And your product, your service, or you are the one that can do that for them, guys. Well, I hope you've enjoyed this weeks episode of Innovation Hackers. We are hacking the code of business, helping people just like you build better businesses so that you can live a life that you deserve, but also, help others do the same as well. Alright guys, have a fantastic week.
Take care and I'll see you on the flipside. Ciao.
